At the recent Fortronic LED event held at the Williams F1 Engineering Centre in Oxford, Ian Loader UK Managing Director of Universal Science used a simple demonstration to illustrate why thermal management is so critical in LED lighting modules. At the beginning of his 50 minute workshop he lit up two identical LEDs – one was fixed directly to the heatsink whilst the other had a piece of UniGraph 5000 thermal interface material placed between the heatsink and the LED. By the end of the session the non-thermally managed LED was distinctly less bright and had experienced a significant change in the colour of its light output but with a short dip in the dry ice, temperature -80C, the LED shone brightly again. The thermally managed LED needed no such cool down and would function within the same colour temperature for many years without any further intervention.
